The ME218B presentations always occur in the atrium of building 550; typically an overhead camera is desirable, but a webcam was challenging to install and secure via a rope suspension, particularly in terms of actually framing the ME218B presentation correctly. Even when achieved, the camera hung in the way of the simulcast projection in the same room.
The building has overhead steel beams, and this camera rig is designed to magnetically attach to the beam - easily accessible due to the lofted walkway - and then be driven into place. The PTZ webcam can then be remotely operated to perfectly frame The magnets were sized to ensure the rig won't fall in an earthquake, though it was always operated with safety tethers just to be sure. Motor drive was accomplished by adapting a garage-door opener.
Laser-cut hardboard. Uses the auto-layout script I developed for Onshape.
